We have been linking lots of our work to Traditional Tales- making our own puppets and perfoming our own tradiitonal tales, building a tunnel for Jack to escape from the Giant with added WOW words inside, making and measuring beanstalks in our creative area. These are just some of the things we have enjoyed doing!

Today the children worked in pairs to choose an object either indoor or outdoor to measure. We worked hard concentrating on measuring accurately the height or length and using non-standard units. Some children needed to use cello tape when measuring height to help stick our chosen measuring equipment down. The children then used accurate counting skills to count how many pieces of equipment were needed and to record this on our whole class chart.

British Science Week - Make it Fly! Year 1 made and tested different paper aeroplanes.

World Book Day. This year we had an outdoor focus with the theme of nature. Year 1 went on a journey to the woodlands and made their own journey sticks. This involved collecting different 'treasures' on our journey and attaching them in chronological order to the stick. We then wrote in detail about our journey using time openers and our sticks to remind us.

We have been practising counting in 2's, 5's and 10's to 100. We have been using unifix cubes to find groups of amounts.

This half term we have been working hard with our addition and subtraction. We having been using lots of practical apparatus to supoort us and have moved onto counting forwards and backwards with numberlines.

Columbus work so far.... 24.1.19

Motty has been in Year 1 today as our Active Maths detective. He helped us with our counting in 2's and 5's dancing this morning and even made it outside on our shape obstacle course!

3D Shapes- Year 1 have been working hard naming and sorting 3D shapes this week. We have been feeling and describing them, playing snap when naming then and finding them in and around our classroom.

To help us practise and understand instruction writing we have had a go at washing some old toys. We worked hard in groups to follow a step by step order and then we wrote up our instructions afterwards.

This week we have had a very cheeky Elf in the classroom, we have been writing about him every day in our choosing provision time.

Take a look at our AMAZING nests that we built as homework. We have been working so hard in science learning about types of habitats.Children have been writing during the week to describe how they made their nests. This amazing work has really inspired the children.

In maths we have been busy practising our place value skills, we have used Numicon to represent a number and have created our own number line to 20, Numicon pieces only go up to 10, some of the children independently combined different Numicon values to make numbers up to 20!
The children have been practising projecting their voices and getting into role through drama, this has helped us become more familiar with stories and to remember their key points. We hope you enjoyed a snippet of this in our KS1 Celebration Assembly!

Year 1 Autumn class newsletter

Welcome back! The children have been 'roaring' to go this week after their restful summer break, I hope you have settled back into your school routines easily at home too.

This week in Maths we have been busy analysing and sorting dinosaur data looking at their diets and features. We have also been counting and adding dinosaur spots and matching these amounts with Numicon resources.

In English the children have worked hard to tell me all about their favourite day in the Summer Holidays. They have also been accessing the phonic provision area finding rhyming words, labelling and naming dinosaurs and creating their own playdough Dinosaur masterpiece!

Outside the children have been working as a team on our new climbing apparatus, sorting dinosaur facts in the sand and building dinosaur dens out of our large wooden blocks.

As you can tell we have worked our socks/claws off!
